Tyler Akins is putting on a week-long series of classes to help Scouts earn a mathematics-related Nova award, which is the first step to their Supernova medal. You can earn it by conducting a few experiments, discussing mathematics, and earning a merit badge. A part of this course will include the Signs, Signals, and Codes merit badge, though Scouts have the option to use another merit badge from a list of ones that are approved by national. To achieve the requirements of the award, a list of videos will be delivered and Scouts will discuss portions of the work each day of the week. Daily homework must be completed. In order to maintain a high level of interaction and because this is a bit of an experiment, the number of available tickets is extremely low. Once it gets posted to the council's site, it could fill up quickly. Cost: $15
When: June 8 - 11, 4:30 each day, class length varies Where: Online via Zoom

Even though we can't meet at as a full troop, there is a very important service opportunity. Memorial Day will be here on Monday and it is the tradition of Troop 283 to place flags at the graves of military veterans at Summit Hill Cemetery and Parkers Lake Cemetery in partnership with the Wayzata American Legion Post. We will meet Saturday at 10am at the Wayzata Legion Club. Please stay in your cars as we keep our social distance. The flags will be divided between two groups and then each group will go to one of the cemeteries to place the flags. Each group is allowed no more than a total of 10 people made up of scouts, parents and family members. Please wear your Class A uniform and a face mask is strongly recommended. To register for the event, please follow the link below. No more than 10 people per group will be allowed to participate in order to follow BSA's current meeting policy. Jackie has a wonderful opportunity: On Sunday, May 31, 9 a.m. to noon, help plant 23 different species of woodland perennials in Hardenbergh Open Space and Maple Creek Park. More than 2,000 plants will be sown to fill in areas where buckthorn has been removed. Hardenbergh Open Space is a truly unique space among Plymouth's parks. Maple Creek Park neighbors have been successfully battling buckthorn for years. Come and check these places out!
Volunteers will follow safe social distancing practices. To register, let me know at jmaas@plymouthmn.gov or 763-509-5230 if you'd like to participate. I will send parking and other important information to those who have registered. I hope you can help out! Hello ladies! I'm sure that most of you are well on your way to earning all of the requirements for rank advancement. In case you need another merit badge or two, I am offering several classes online via Zoom. Class sizes are small in order to keep the level of participation and involvement high. They are slated to run three hours with a break and will soon be listed on the council's website, and I know that people from around the country will jump at the opportunity to sign up (I've had people from Puerto Rico, Texas, California, New York, Washington, and other states). There's no fees and registration is super simple. It's worth considering just so you can see how long my hair is.

The Scouts deserve to show off their awards, receive tremendous applause, visit with their friends, and feel more connected with each other. Our current standing is that a virtual event would not really satisfy the needs, so we will be waiting until the fall Court of Honor for recognition.
Some may look on this and be sad. Others could see an opportunity to receive recognition for multiple ranks, a dozen merit badges, outdoor awards, STEM awards, and a plethora of new skills. Instead of feeling trapped inside, seek out opportunities outside and try to expand your horizons. There are a lot of exciting possibilities. |
